HOW TO BE QUEER

When Naomi realises she is queer at 23, she has to squeeze all her sexual adolescence into one year in order to stay on the life-schedule she has set for herself.

A 6 x 7 minute web series created by
ALLY MORGAN & CLARE CAVANAGH

Directed by MONICA ZANETTI

HOW TO BE QUEER is not a coming-out story. It’s a story about realising you’re queer, being pretty psyched about being queer, but being freaked out that you’ve come to the party too late and you’re not wearing the right outfit or talking to the right people, and even though you’ve been to other parties before you don’t know what to do at this party and anyway none of those other parties even count for anything anymore because if you don’t get THIS party RIGHT then you’re never going to be happy.

But like, it’s fun.

HOW TO BE QUEER’s pilot episode was funded thanks to Melbourne Queer Film Festival after the team won the 2020 Pitch Pleez! Competition.

The pilot episode has since opened MQFF’s 2021 Festival and had its international premiere at OutFest LA 2021.

We are currently in pre-production for the full series.

Mark Paguio, Clare Cavanagh, Ally Morgan and Stella Ye on set.

WRITERS STATEMENT

Ally Morgan and Clare Cavanagh created How To Be Queer to honour the many people who, like themselves, didn't realise they were queer until they were well into their 20s. This short film is the pilot episode to a 6 part series that aims to honour the plurality and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community by attempting to answer the age old question: "How to the hell do you "be queer"?. The story also aims to particularly honour the pansexual and bisexual community who, due to biphobia, have had a uniquely difficult journey in finding acceptance. Ultimately, the story tells us that there is no one way to be queer... you do you, Hon.

Also, whilst I've got your attention: we need funding to make the full series. It's gonna be gr8. Someone should splash some cash at this money maker.

(Legitimately though, we are looking for Sponsors! Pass it on.)
